Epic Brown Rice Ale

Epic Brewery is Utah's newest brewery and the first strong beer brewer in the state since prohibition. Though Epic only recently opened it's doors (May 17th, 2010) it has already taken home awards at a California beer festival and has been unable to produce it's beer fast enough to keep up with demand and has been emptying their cold cases daily. Epic sells their strong craft brews directly to the public in 22oz bottles from their brewery and showroom. I have tried a number of their brews and have to say even though it is the newest of the state's breweries, it is my overall favorite Utah brewery. The Brown Rice Ale is part of Epic's Exponential Series, which is their line of special ales and lagers, which is usually produced in limited batches. The first release of the Brown Rice Ale was only 1,800 bottles. The Brown Rice Ale is light in color made with organic brown rice. It is 6% alcohol by volume. It has a very clean, almost lager like taste with a hint of spice with a smooth nutty finish. I drank this beer directly from the bottle so I am not sure how it pours and what kind of head it produces. It is a great beer for tailgating (which is where I had my first taste), afternoon picnics and late night BBQ's.

I give this beer a rating of 9.

Next up: Let's mix it up a bit and rate some wine. Washington State's Columbia Winery: 2005 Gewurztraminer. After that Rogue's Dead Guy Whiskey!
